College of Natural Resources

The college supports a growing number of IT facilities and resources throughout Cheatham Hall and various department and center locations.

Computer Labs

Microcomputer Teaching Lab (220 Cheatham)

The Microcomputer laboratory has 33 Dell Optiplex computers. Each computer has an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.33 GHz processor, 22” flat panel display, 160 Gb disk storage, 4 Gb RAM, and a DVD+/-RW drive.  All computers in the lab are networked using Ethernet cabling, Windows 7, and a central file server. The file server has a Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz processor, 2.5 terabytes of disk storage, and 4 Gb of RAM. The server enables users to share files and have centralized printing capabilities via a networked laser printer.  Software in the facility includes Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010, ESRI GIS software, SAS, Erdas Imagine, and Idrissi Taiga.

Center for Quantitative Studies (CEARS - 217 Cheatham)

The CEARS facility has 25 Dell Optiplex 755 Windows 7 workstations with Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz processors, 8 Gb memory, 160 GB disk storage, 24" display, DVD-R+/CD-RW drive and all connected to a Windows 2003 server with over 10 Tb of disk storage via a 100 Mbs network.  The lab supports a high speed networked color laser printer, a large format plotter for map and poster production, and a complete suite of image processing (ENVI, Merrick MARS, Definiens, Feature Analyst, ERDAS Imagine) and associated software, including compilers (IDL, Absoft Fortran, Matlab, Visual Basic, and C++), statistical packages (R, SAS, Minitab CART), and GIS (ESRI products).

Geography computer lab

The Geography department GIS Laboratory is made up of 18 Dell Optiplex 980 Windows 7 computers with Intel Core I5 3.6 GHz processors, 8 Gb memory, 500 Gb disk storage, 24” display, and DVD+/-RW drive; connected to a Dell PowerEdge 2900 server with 20 Tb of storage. The Department’s GIS Laboratory is utilized for coursework and research, including specialized systems for GIS, cartography, and remote sensing. Software packages include the complete suite of desktop and workstation ArcGIS, ArcEngine, Surfer, MapObjects, Trimble GPS Pathfinder, IDRISI Andes, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI/IDL, and eCognition.

Brooks Forest Products Center computer lab

The Brooks computer laboratory has 8 Dell Optiplex computers configured identically to the one’s in the Microcomputer lab.  They have the same software packages installed and the lab acts as an extension of the Microcomputer lab (including networked to the same server) for those students housed in the Brooks Forest Products Center.
